There are plenty of monuments to visit in
Bologna. Here is a list of the most famous monuments:
PIAZZA MAGGIORE (the largest square):
the construction of this square started in 1200 when it became obvious
to the people of the city that they needed an open square for the market.
Today it’s the heart of the political and public life.
SAN PETRONIO:
is the most famous basilica in Bologna and it is dedicated to the saint
of the city. According to the legend the saint measured the perimeter of the
entire city with four crucifixes, which one can see today inside the
basilica. The basilica San Petronio was constructed in 1390.
PALAZZO COMUNALE (The Municipality):
is the symbol of the Bolognese power. This palace consists of three
palaces; Palazzo delle Biade (XIII – XV century), Palazzo del Senato (The
palace of the Senate) (XV century) Palazzo del Cardinale Legato (the palace
of the cardinal) (XVI century). Of particular interest is the Tower of
Accursi, which was constructed in 1444, and the public clock is placed here
as well.
THE ARCHEOLOGICAL CIVIC MUSEUM:
is placed in the city centre inside the Palace of Galvani next to the
basilica of San Petronio and Piazza Maggiore. After several reconstructions
the palace became a museum in the year 1881.
THE TWO TOWERS:
are the most famous towers in Bologna. During the medieval period there was
more than 100 towers. The towers are placed on the via Emilia on the
entrance to the city. During the medieval period the towers held important
positions for the defence system of the city. Gherardo Asinelli constructed
the tower of Asinelli in the years between 1109 and 1119.
The tower of Garisenda differs from the
other one since it’s less high. The tower was named after the noble brothers
Filippo and Addo Garisendi. Dante Alighieri also mentioned this tower in the
Divine Comedy, in a song of hell.
SANTO STEFANO:
this church was built in 392 and it consists of four churches. When the
Lombards conquered the city in the year of 727, this church became the
religious centre of the city.
The works that we can admire on the inside are made by Benedict monks who
began the reconstruction in the X century.
PALAZZO POGGI:
from the year 1803 this is the main building of the university in Bologna.
It was constructed on orders by the cardinal Giovanni Poggi during the years
1549 and 1556.
SAN FRANCESCO:
is a convent that is the first example of French gothic style in Italy
and it was constructed during 1236 and 1254. The convent became a popular
burial place for the university teachers and the most famous persons buried
here are the Glossaries who were ancient teachers of the Roman law.
PINACOTECA NAZIONALE:
is placed inside the ex convent Sant Ignazio of the Jesuits in the
university quarters. It’s one of the most important art museums in Italy and
it has a beautiful collection of paintings of horses from the XIII and XVIII
century. In 1997 the museum was completely restored. Some of the most famous
artists exhibited here are; Giotto, Raffaello, Perugino, Tintoretto and
Tiziano.
